John O Todd, Sr. creates the first Non-Qualified Executive Benefit Plan for the Cargill Company

Todd Sells


Todd sells the first Non-Qualified Benefit Plan utilizing Corporate Owned Life Insurance (COLI) to a publicly-traded company - General Electric.



The John O. Todd Organization is officially established with its office in Cleveland, Ohio.

Makes History


The Todd Organization makes history by implementing a non-qualified deferred compensation (NQDC) plan using insurance—which later becomes the Mirror 401(k) Plan—for a large New York City bank.

New Products


Todd designs new products in response to the Tax Reform Act of 1986 (TRA 86), which puts severe restrictions on the deductibility of policy loan interest.



Todd sets out to create an attractive alternative to municipal bonds and develops Bank Owned Life Insurance (BOLI).



The Todd Organization works with Congress and the Treasury to limit restrictions on COLI, saving this product and protecting tax-deferred inside build-up in life insurance.

Fixed Rate


In response to market changes and taxation issues, Todd creates a Fixed Rate Plan to help executives diversity their portfolios.



The Pension Protection Act of 2006 includes COLI best practice legislation. Leaders of The Todd Organization and the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) meet with the country’s leaders and assist in drafting this legislation.
